The Scientific Method

While students are busy studying for their Human Body Test, I thought I would take a moment to give you a sneak peak at what we will be working on next...The Scientific Method

From the very beginning students wanted to know if we would be doing any experiments!  They should be happy to know that next week will be filled with experiments.  All experiments start with a good question!

Do more expenisve chocoloate chip cookies have more chocolate chips?

Are more expensive diapers more absorbant?

These are a few questions we will answer while we learn the steps in the scientific method.  I can't wait to hear what questions students can come up with !

Save Fred!

Today in Science we did an activity that involved students working together.  This is what they found on their desks.

The task: SAVE FRED!
Fred is a gummy worm.  He can't swim so he always wears a life preserver (the ring).  However, his boat (the cup) capsized before he put on his life preserver.  It is your job to work together to help Fred get into his life preserver.  You can't touch Fred, the boat, or preserver using your hands.  You can only use the paper clips.  Good luck!

Here is how it went...

Needless to say, Fred drowned a couple of times, but he was saved and did get his life preserver on and back in his boat.  Afterwards, we talked about our strategies and how coming up with a plan and working together was very useful in this activity (and in life, really)!

Next up is the Human Body...and all those wonderful (and gross) things that go on inside us!

Welcome Back!!

Welcome back!  We have the first day under our belts.  Our day was filled with some 'getting to know you' activities, computers, passing out math books, and most of it was dedicated to putting supplies away!  Thank you for making sure students had all their goodies!  I will send home some more notes about classroom procedures throughout the week.  For your child's homework tonight, please complete the Student Contact Information send it back with them.  I hope your child had a great day and I can't wait to see them again tomorrow!

Getting Started...

This weekend I had the opportunity to get into school and get some work done in our classroom.  Here is a picture of what it looked like when I walked in...

It was pretty bare.  No bulletin boards, no posters, just bare.  After several hours, it looks much better!  I at least feel like I am making progress.

There is still plenty to do. Including this...

AHHHH!  I will be ready for you on August 20th!  See you then!

Trivia Starts at 7:00 p.m.

Has anyone ever participated in TRIVIA NIGHT!  It is a lot of fun!  My team has never done particularly well, but we have certainly had fun!  There are raffles and drawings available to help raise money to support students at PES.  Parents for Students is a wonderful parent organization that funds school field trip transportation, and raises money for other educational materials and equipment to enhance your child's education.  Trivia Night forms are available at the school.  I hope to see you all there!

If you are unable to participate in Trivia Night, but would like to be a part of this organization, they do have monthly meetings that you can attend.  I will keep you posted on the dates!

We are ROCKING the ISATs!

Well, we are on Day 3 of our ISAT testing!  Yeah!  After today we only have one test to do and then we are ready to celebrate!  Our darlings are working hard and their brains are definitely getting a workout!  I am proud of students for taking their time and trying their best!  I know these tests can be draining and a little intimidating (you should see the size of their test booklet) but these test are important to our school.  State funding can often be tied to test scores and students work hard all year...I want them to show what they know!  In their academic career students will be asked to take several tests that will impact their future...ACTs, SATs, college placement exams.  It is important to always try their best!

Students loved reading notes from you yesterday morning before the test!  It was funny because many could not figure out how you got them here!!  Here is a photo of the message that Mrs. Reutzel left for each student this morning!

Have a great day!

Angry Verbs

Here are our Angry Verbs...yes, I know, they look like birds...but they are Angry Verbs.

We have been talking about different kinds of verbs.  Students tend to just think about just action verbs.  However, there are those tiny little linking verbs like is, are, and am.  Then there are helping and main verbs when two verbs are paired together, for example, is jumping.  On our birds students had to write a sentence, identify the verb, then tell me what type of verb.  Of course, I had their attention when I pulled out the Angry Birds.  This is not a game that I know...but anything to get their attention!  They have also gotten a lot of attention hanging in the hallway.  I hope you enjoy them!

Thank you for supporting your child with their multiplication facts.  We are doing a good job earning our root beer floats!!

Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!
I know it is hard to beleive, but our class is certainly buzzing with the excitement of our party coming!  It is such a fun day for kids, and I love watching them open their cards and reading their messages!  And oh the candy!!  Makes my teeth hurt just thinking about the candy!  Thank you to all parents who volunteered to help or donated items for our party today!  I hope you enjoy your Valentine's Day with your loved ones!

Shadow Puppets

We had an interesting day in Science today.  They actually had the chance to make hand puppets!  I mean they may try to sneak one in here or there while I am not looking and the projector is on, but today I actually LET them...encouraged them even!  We were learning about light and exploring reflection, refraction, and shadows.  Let me just say, we have some very talented shadow puppeteers!  I was trying to figure out how I could get a picture of this to post...if you have any ideas let me know, but the light was just reflecting off of the camera.  I had a few different strategies with no luck.  I think they had a fun day of learning!!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!  It is hard to believe that school is halfway done...CRAZY!  The second half of the year will be busy.  I will keep you posted with the events coming up!

Tonight I asked students to check out a new website we will be using called Manga High.

I am still working on the best way to utilize this site; however, I would like all students to log in (if you have internet access) to play the challenge.  I believe the challenge involves answering addition problems and taking out robots.  This is not quite the subject matter I would have preferred, but it was what I could get into to test how this will work.  I should be able to sign in tomorrow and see how everyone did.  Eventually, I will be able to assign challenges to go along with what we are doing in class and we can even challenge other schools!  Let me know your thoughts on this website....I joked that I couldn't believe I was assigning 'video games' tonight for homework!  Like I said earlier, I am TESTING this!  There should be other games they can play.

I am also working on updating the blog and adding a new background.  It is not quite working the way I was hoping, but hopefully it will have a new look soon without me losing what we have already!

Just a reminder, report cards will come home tomorrow.  If you have any questions about grades, please contact me.

Have a good night..enjoy this crazy weather!
